STAR Testing
STAR assessments are mandatory tests administered by schools that are used to screen students for their reading and math achievement levels. STAR assessments are also used to monitor student growth throughout the year, to estimate student’s understanding of state standards and predict student’s performance on the state test. STAR assessments also help teachers determine appropriate instructional levels and skill that students are ready to learn. Each school year, a pretest and posttest will be administered to each student.

Grade 9 Information
Guidance Counselors help students make a positive transition to the academic, personal and social challenges of the High School. The Counselor visits classrooms and brings students to the Counseling Center in order to get to know their students as quickly as possible. The academic progress of each student is monitored by means of interim reports and report card checks. Student’s progress will be tracked and made available on the school’s shared Google drive. Students will be introduced to Career Zone, the High School’s web-based college and career planning program. In January and February, students, parents, teachers and the counselor will be involved in the planning process to select tenth grade courses. Grade 10 Information As students proceed through our high school program, they will receive assistance with preparation for college, career and post high school plans. Instruction in career exploration is provided. During high school, students may decide to take tests such as the SAT Subject Tests. These tests are in specific subjects and students may take a test in mathematics, science, world history or second language. In January and February, students, parents, and the counselor will be involved in the planning process to select eleventh-grade courses. Grade 11 Information During Junior year, students will plan to engage in the following activities: Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), the Scholastic Assessment Tests (SAT & SAT Subject Tests), and the American College Tests (ACT). Students will be encouraged to take the appropriate tests to make themselves viable candidates for entrance into post-high school institutions, careers or the Armed Services. In November, the counselor and students will begin to research colleges using Career Zone and various resources through classroom instruction and small-group meetings. Selection criteria such as college majors, locations, cost and other personal preferences help each student review a variety of institutions. In January and February, students, parents, teachers and the counselor will be involved in the planning activities to select 12th grade courses. Students, parents and the counselor will have an opportunity to review academic records and to discuss post-high school plans. A Career Fair Event will be scheduled in the Spring. A date and time for the event will be sent home in a newsletter and posted to the Counseling Center webpage. This event gathers local companies and their employees to provide information about the different kinds of job opportunities available in the community. This is a fantastic great career exploration opportunity for students to discover their interests, duties involved in different occupations and detailed information about various career opportunities. |
Grade 12 Information
As we approach the final year of the high school guidance and counseling program, the counselor works with students and families to finalize post-high school plans. Each twelfth-grade student needs to meet all graduation requirements and to set appropriate post-high school goals. Please review the graduation requirements to make sure that all requirements will be met at the end of this year. Also, please check Career Zone, the Counseling Center webpage and the Counseling Center new board for additional information. Please note the policy regarding the reporting of test scores/transcripts: SAT and ACT scores must be reported to colleges by the Educational Testing Service and/or the ACT. No scores and/or transcripts will be reported by Warren Street Academy. Official transcripts will be issued from the student’s home school district and directly sent to the college. Students must request scores to be sent to colleges of their choice when they register for the tests or when they receive their results. For Early Decision and Early Action applications, students must request these scores in early Fall. The Counseling Center will host many college representatives during the year to speak to students about their institutions. We encourage seniors to take advantage of this opportunity to obtain college information. A College Event will be scheduled in the auditorium. A date and time for the event will be sent home in a newsletter and posted to the Counseling Center webpage. This event provides information about the different kinds of colleges, the programs they offer, admissions requirements, the financial aid application process, the college application process, the college essay, the college visit and other relevant topics.
Each fall and spring there is a College Fair at Hudson Valley Community College. More than 200 colleges are represented. Parents and students are encouraged to attend the evening session of the Fall CASCA Hudson Valley Community College Fair, on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. |

Thanks to generous donations from Hannaford's and Madison Wealth Management, the students and staff raised over $350 for this great program. |

School Year 2014
Cupcakes For a Cause :6/13/14
Our most recent community outreach event, on June 13th, was Cupcakes for a Cause bake sale. This event was something that students came to staff and voiced that they wanted to do. They wanted to raise money for kids with cancer. All proceeds for Cupcakes for a Cause go towards CancerCare, a nonprofit organization that provides free services to children and families affected by cancer. Our students went to the surrounding community to distribute hand-made flyers to promote the cause. They spoke to business owners about CancerCare allowing them to use their communication skills to get people to come out and support them. They utilized math, science and life skills to make and distribute the cupcakes. Their plan was to sell the cupcakes in the front yard of our school. Even though it rained, the students persevered and were flexible enough to change their method of distribution. They opened up a classroom to the public to sell the cupcakes and still rose over $200 dollars. Additionally, it was the first event that students really took a role in planning.

Memorial Day Flag Ceremony: 5/23/14
On May 23rd, we went with our students to a Memorial Day flag ceremony at the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Firemen’s Home, located on Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson. To commemorate the deaths of fallen heroes, the firemen graciously educated our students on a proper flag presenting ceremony. For the ceremony, the firemen took our students into the cemetery located on the grounds to have each student put a flag next to each grave. They took this job very seriously, and were kindly rewarded with a barbecue by the firefighters afterwards, where they enjoyed their time socializing and becoming acquainted with the Firemen’s Home. Not only did this event serve as a community outreach but as an educating opportunity.

Community Cleanup: 5/10/2014
In early May, we had another community outreach event, in which we had several students, in conjunction with the Mental Health Association and Americorp, go into the community for a community cleanup. Not only did this help students see mental health in a different light but it brought value to keeping their community clean. From 11:30 am-1:30 pm on May 10th, our students worked hard to ensure the cleanliness within the community that their school is not only a part of, but also the community they live within.
Community Open House: 4/3/2014
In April, we hosted a Community Open House, in which we invited the community to come into our building to gain a greater understanding of our educational program. On April 3rd, we had several students take charge of educating the community on the well-rounded education they are obtaining within our school building. This allowed our students to not only ale pride in their school but to take a leadership role in their schools. Several local businesses came and were able to tour the building with our students, while many students were able to make school-to-work connections. Furthermore, we had several businesses extend the offer to have students help out within their businesses as needed and to further help our students learn valuable work and social skills.
